Narrative — you run into a friend you haven’t seen in a while — “What’s been going on with you?” What’s the story you’re currently telling about yourself, to yourself (and to others)?
I was injured at work this week and got stitches, which was a novel and inconvenient experience. It is now generally the first thing people (including strangers) bring up when they see me, unfortunately. I’ve been wearing a perfume egg necklace to distract from it and create a different and preferable conversation venue.
Cosmic Wink — when was the universe laughing at you (or with you?)
Two moments:
One — my friend couldn’t get a trinket machine to dispense her capsule, so the store worker reached in and gave her two to share with me. Inside were temporary tattoos, so we were both able to enjoy a surprise.
Two — I meant to attend a PhD thesis defense but slept through my alarm and joined virtually instead. When I got to campus afterwards, I explored a floor I had never been to (on which the defense took place) and discovered a roof deck that I otherwise wouldn’t have found.
Emote — crying, yelling, acting out. What emotions took focus (or perhaps took control?)
Exhaustion (more of a state than an emotion) from working an internship and a job from 9 to 9 each day.
Sleep — any dreams?
I haven’t been remembering them lately (possibly due to the aforementioned exhaustion) which is a good thing, as I tend to have nightmares.
Conclusion — what is something that came to an end this month? (Perhaps you’re happy to see it go…)
The slow routine. Am living with greater haste and urgency, which is mostly welcome.
Palette — give the last month a color
It’s always IKB for me.
Weather, meals — James Salter wrote “Life is weather, life is meals.” Log one enduring recent memory of each.
Weather: I took this at an evening on the terrace event at the Athenaeum last night and a layer of fog was draped over the city.
Meals: I secured a reservation at The Red Fox, a new speakeasy in the North End, with my childhood friend and we had a great night swapping cocktails and stories.
