LIKE JAZZ
Describe a time recently where things were chaotic, unplanned, or decidedly odd, but yet it was totally right. When the circumstances shouldn’t have worked out, and yet….
I don’t have any recent experiences that fit under this descriptor, but I would say that in the midst of my daily activities, I tend to prefer to move around based off of mood rather than routine, so I end up discovering a lot of new places as I take different paths or explore a bit further. I like to travel by walking partially for this reason and secondly because the T is expensive and frequently late or canceled. I’ve turned errand runs into impromptu self-dates at a museum or opportunities to try cafes I have saved on my to-go list. I’ve also made a number of friends through these explorations and now have connections in different industries and feel grateful for these organic encounters, which seem increasingly rare in the world today
SIX MONTHS AGO
What was different in January? Cite 1 thing.
I had no idea how I would be spending my summer. Now, I’m conducting legal research I find interesting among a group of experts at an institution I would never have imagined I’d be able to enter.
SIX MONTHS FROM NOW
What will be different (next) January? Cite 1 thing.
I will be halfway done with law school, which already feels so much shorter than undergrad. Hopefully, I will have even more experience in intellectual property and will have a stronger grasp on the path I’ll be on in the industry.
SQUEAKY WHEEL
Identify something boring that you should change, update, or tend to but you keep procrastinating.
I can’t decide how to arrange or decorate my room and as a result have just piled up trinkets I’ve accumulated on top of raised surfaces. There’s a designated clutter pile on one table in my room and it will continue to grow in mass and height until I finally make a choice about how to present everything.
UNEXPECTED TWISTS
What’s been the most recent change that surprised you? (Maybe you surprised yourself?)
I’ve been able to change my mind about things that a year ago I would have been stuck on. Possibly a product of more diplomatic and dual-sided analysis practiced in law school. Still a surprise, as an earth sign.
HAPPY PLACE
What locations other than home are currently feeling “like home”?
“Currently”, but not actually in the last 6 months: One of my favorite places to go to is Watch Hill in Westerly, RI. I have tried to make it an annual trip in recent years, and am due for a return sometime this late summer or fall. It’s such a quintessential New England beach and the shops, cafes, and buildings hold such new nostalgia for me.
HAPPY MEAL
What’s been the best dining experience in recent memory…that had nothing to do with the food?
I went to a Lost Nights wine & music evening at Faro Cafe in Harvard Sq. with a new friend and everything about the ambiance from the red lighting, to our conversation, to the warm Cambridge summer air, to the collective energy of the other patrons made it a magical evening.
GOLDEN LIGHT
Recall a recent sunset, observed.
Just yesterday, I was on my evening walk along the Charles and I kept stopping to appreciate the sunset. There had been some precipitation that day, so there were a few clouds lingering in the sky that caught the colors of the light particularly well. I really treasure these walks where I see the city pass from day into night, where the streets are illuminated by the house lights emanating from residents’ brownstones.
